Bureau Telecommunications and Post St. Maarten (BTP-SXM), represented by PR-/ Marketing Manager Ryan Wijngaarde, participated at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the leading Caribbean Telecom Association ‘CANTO’, that was held in Suriname last week.
CANTO’s mission is to shape the future of the Information and Telecommunications sector as well as to facilitate the development of ICT solutions in the Caribbean region. Active involvement of BTP-SXM is crucial as both organizations share common interest in the further development of broadband.

Within the framework of the visit, BTP-SXM also participated in a CANTO working group that is focusing on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) projects in the region. Latest initiative is an Electronic-Waste (E-Waste) project with the objective to raise awareness for the rising mobile phone disposal problem and to develop solutions for a way forward.

Director of BTP-SXM, Mr. Anthony Carty stated: “it is of great importance that Sint Maarten work towards the implementation of a sound E-Waste program. As the regulatory authority of the Telecom industry we will take the initiative to provide initial support to Telecom Providers and Government to find ways to soundly manage mobile phone disposal in Sint Maarten. We support the mission and vision of CANTO and are committed to work diligently with the regional CSR-team in creating awareness for the E-waste problem”.

The CANTO 31st annual AGM was well attended. The meetings were deemed productive and BTP-SXM will continue to support local and regional CSR initiatives and look forward to work together with institutions that are embracing continuous improvement of internet development.
