Control of the use of DECT 6.0
Published on: May 25, 2015
MARIGOT - The Préfecture reminds the public that Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications (DECT) telephones do not conform to European Union (EU) standards and are banned in St. Martin and St. Barths.
The cordless phones are the "DECT 6.0" type imported from the USA and Canada which work on frequencies not authorised by the EU. Use of these phones causes disruption and performance issues to mobile phone networks.
The latest warning from the Préfecture comes as controllers from Agence Nationale des Fréquences (ANFR) plan a visit to St. Martin and St. Barths from May 23 to June 5.
In 2014 ANFR, in cooperation with the Gendarmerie issued 60 fines and destroyed 77 cordless phones illegally in use.
Use of a banned cordless phone incurs a fine of 450 euros and consistent use of a banned phone that disrupts other frequencies can result in six months imprisonment and a 30,000 euro fine.
Persons in possession of a DECT cordless phone should check to see if a "CE" mark is stamped on the phone.
