Full transition to DVB-T on January 1st 2013

St. Maarten will make a full transition to DVB-T on January 1st 2013. This means that if you have a standard analog TV, you will no longer be able to receive over the air television. This was announced by COO of BTP-SXM, Mr. Giovanni King, during a DVB-T Seminar on April 10th 2012 in Divi little bay Beach resort. Digital Television consultant from the USA, Ms. Myra Moore who was also present, gave a keynote address on the global standards and future developments of Digital Television.

On March 20th 2012, Honorable Minister Franklin Meyers (Minister of Telecommunications), Ms. Peggy-Ann Brandon (Director BTP-SXM) and Mr. Normand Fortier (CEO SX Registry). officially launched the new internet domain for country St. Maarten: “ .SX ”. .SX will replace the .AN domain and is another major step in creating a unique identity for new country St. Maarten and promoting autonomy.

Impoundment illegal wireless communication devices

Inspectors of Bureau Telecommunications and Post St. Maarten conducted regulatory activities last week with the aim to curtail the sale of illegal wireless communication devices in St. Maarten. A total of 161 illegal wireless communication devices were confiscated and a process verbal of impoundment was issued by the inspector of BTP-SXM against the retail store owners.

Bureau Telecommunication and Post St. Maarten (BTP SXM) has taken note of the fact that, there are whole sale and retail stores in St. Maarten offering in sale devices not in compliance with the rules and regulations on the import and sale of wireless electronic communication devices. BTP SXM herewith reminds all sellers of electronic communication devices that, only the sale of FCC or CE approved wireless electronic communications devices is permitted in St. Maarten.

VHF Radio exams

On September 23rd 2011 VHF Radio exams where conducted on St. Maarten at Bureau Telecommunication and Post St. Maarten. In total 25 participants sat the VHF Radio exams in order to obtain a VHF operator’s license. The execution of the closed book exam was in the presence of two registered invigilators appointed by Bureau telecommunication and Post St. Maarten.

BTP donates data servers to MPC

Bureau Telecommunications and Post St. Maarten donated two HP servers, a Linksys 4 Bay gig network storage system and a large server rack to the IT department of the Milton Peter College in St. Maarten. The data storage system and servers will form a critical part of a network that will execute a number of important functions such as: providing shared access to files, provide central email services, central data management and access control to the network.

New tariff structure Communication Industry

The Bureau Telecommunications and Post St. Maarten shall issue on consultation the draft proposal of a new tariff structure for the communications industry on St. Maarten, prior to its presentation to the Government of Sint Maarten. This consultation round is intended to obtain observations and recommendations from participants and stakeholders within the communication industry on St. Maarten, for due incorporation.
